Summer of 69 novel6/29/2023 ![]() But (of course you know this if you’ve ever read any other Elin Hilderband novels) the setting is just as big of a character as any: Nantucket. It includes several members of their extended family as well as a few sweet friends and a couple villains. In perfect Elin Hilderbrand (yes, she is always first and last name with me) fashion, this story features one pretty normal family with plenty of quirks and mess and tells a story about their summer. ![]() She is my junk food author! What is Summer of ’69 about? ![]() That’s how I feel about Elin Hilderbrand. My sister-in-law refers to Agatha Christy novels as junk food: they might not be super meaty, heavy, or thought provoking, but she flies through them and they always leave her satisfied. It came out in 2019 and I bought it as soon as I saw it in paperback. ![]() Basically anything that Elin Hilderbrand writes goes directly to my TBR list, and Summer of ’69 was no exception. ![]()

Crichton eaters of the dead6/29/2023 ![]() What the heck is this? “The Manuscript of Ibn Fadlan, Relating His Experiences with the Northmen in AD 922.” Ooooookkkkk…. And it’s Michael Crichton, right? He is one of our best known creature sci-fi writers. It sure sounds like a book about zombies. I was shocked to find it wasn’t sci-fi.When I pulled Eaters of the Dead from my shelf, two things happened: It is almost tempting to Google InGen and expect to find real stocktickers or company data. ![]() With his science fiction, he often creates fictitious organizations or groundbreaking legal statutes–anything that will build up his coming story and provide a plausible backbone. The reader can hardly separate his “facts” from reality and is immediately drawn into whatever world Crichton has masterfully created. But the way he folds them into his introduction, they seem like an Author’s Note at the start of any other book, laying the real, historical foundation before diving into fiction. ![]() Right from the beginning of a Michael Crichton novel, he begins selling untruths. ![]()

Friend of the Devil by Brendan McNally6/28/2023 ![]() It was all extremely interesting, but what put the hook in me was his description of being in Flensburg in the days immediately after the fighting had stopped. It left me a lot of time of read and during that time I read Inside the Third Reich by Albert Speer. He goes on to say:Īfter bombing out of Art School, I went to work on a tugboat hauling oil rigs around the Gulf of Mexico. At his author page on the S&S website, he says one of his best qualities is his "endless curiosity," and that shows in his writing. He's also worked as a merchant seaman, bookstore manager, and oyster shucker (trades I have yet to pick up). His background is in journalism-specifically, writing about the defense industry-so we have that in common as well. Sometimes you want to cheer for new writers, then cry disappointing tears when they don't take off like you'd hoped.įor that reason alone I feel some kinship with McNally. His debut seemed to have joined that long list of novels deserving better treatment by the reading public than ending up in the Barnes and Noble Bargain Books section. I greatly enjoyed McNally's novel and often wondered why he hadn't published anything since Germania-which, frankly, didn't do as well in sales as Simon & Schuster was probably hoping. ![]() ![]() To read the rest of the review, click here ![]()

Tek war movie6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() For example, one chapter ended with the phrase ". There's even a good bit of unintentional humor here too. Meanwhile, it never once talks about the consequences of its world. Sometimes, it mixes it up a bit and has stuff happen, then characters explain out loud what you just read. Characters declare their intentions, then events happen. While obviously ghostwritten, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was penned by The Shat. Toss in double crosses and robot double, and stir. Plot: People use disposable computer chips as drugs, scientist creates device that can destroy all drug chips. It's that special kind of genre book that has all the flying cars and moving sidewalks of science fiction, but without any of the interesting thought that made that stuff interesting. It's obviously Ghost written, with The Shat sitting behind the scenes tossing out words that start in Plas- or Laz. Think noir detective story with shades of Regan-era drug war, and painted in faux-SciFi. Well, I wanted an easy break from all the heavy reading I usually do, and this actually fit the bill. It smells like must and cigarette smoke, and it likely has a garage sale sticker on the front that won't come off. The tracking might be a bit off too, and the audio's a bit fuzzy. Throughout this short read, I imagined I was watching a bad 80's sci-fi flick on VHS, complete with laughable special effects. ![]()
