Immortal Hulk, Vol. 7 by Al Ewing6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The Hulk’s childlike attitude is also why he often lacks character depth. The Avengers treat him as their buddy because that’s how the monster can be kept under control. He’s kind of a bratty child, which can be endearing. He’s brought in to join a superhero team, and they use the Hulk to their advantage, even though sometimes they lose control of him.īut the Hulk isn’t frightening in the MCU. Bruce Banner is a hapless physicist who sometimes loses his temper, which wouldn’t be a problem if it didn’t cause him to transform into a destructive monster. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), he’s a game-changing weapon for the Avengers, their ace in the hole, a nearly unbeatable beast. ![]() Did I mention he’s green? In all fairness, that’s how he’s portrayed. He gets stronger as he gets angrier, and he’s not much for intellectualizing and problem-solving. People think of the Hulk as a dumb green muscle. ![]()

![]() ![]() A Parliamentary inquiry revealed fraud among members of the government, including the Conservative Party Chancellor of the Exchequer John Aislabie, who was sent to prison. ![]() A speculative bubble saw the share price reach over £1000 in August 1720, but then crash in September. ![]() In fact, barely any trade took place as Spain renounced the Treaty, however this was concealed on the British stock market. A speculative bubble grew and then collapsed, and Law was expelled.Īfter the War of Spanish Succession, Great Britain signed the Treaty of Utrecht 1713 with Spain, ostensibly allowing it to trade in the seas near South America. He marketed shares based on great wealth, which was highly exaggerated. Scottish economist John Law convinced the French government to support a monopoly trade venture in Louisiana. Owned by the Medici family, it ran up large debts due to the family's profligate spending, extravagant lifestyle, and failure to control the managers, their bank went insolvent. The following list of corporations involved major collapses, through the risk of job losses or size of the business, and meant entering into insolvency or bankruptcy, or being nationalised or requiring a non-market loan by a government. Many recent corporate collapses and scandals have involved false or inappropriate accounting of some sort (see list at accounting scandals). A corporate scandal involves alleged or actual unethical behavior by people acting within or on behalf of a corporation. A corporate collapse typically involves the insolvency or bankruptcy of a major business enterprise. ![]()

The chicken dance by jacques couvillon6/25/2023 ![]() But it also leads him to discover that his parents have been hiding family secrets. This spurs a dramatic chain of events that makes Don the most popular kid in town. Then one day, Don enters the chicken-judging contest at the local dairy festival and becomes the youngest person in history ever to win. He is sort of unpopular, both at home (where his mother refers nonstop to his talented, dancing, dead sister, Dawn) and at school (where the other kids call him "new kid" even though he's been at the school for several years). With nowhere else to turn, Don begins a friendship with the chickens that live outside his window on the family's farm. This is where eleven-year-old Don Schmidt lives on a chicken farm with his parents. ![]() Welcome to Horse Island, where knowing about chickens is the key to popularity and eggs are more valuable than money. ![]()

Landscape Turned Red by Stephen W. Sears6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() (Some of the source materials that Sears describes have not been used before.) As McClellan prepares cautiously to engage Lee, the British, averse to backing a loser, are waiting to see which way the war will go, while in Lincoln's desk ""is the paper declaring emancipation for the slaves, still requiring a victory in battle to work its revolutionary effect."" At Antietam, McClellan's army will win despite him-and with that double lesson, Lincoln can safely let him go. ![]() And such shrewd insights abound here-as Sears, from his long experience as an American Heritage editor, puts the Union victory at Antietam Creek, on September 17, 1862, at the center of the Civil War (politically as well as militarily) and also expands his chronicle internally, through character-portrayal, quotation, documentation. Still, he temporized: as author Sears remarks laconically, ""a messiah could not afford to be a gambler"" furthermore, a northern Democrat, like McClellan, might also have different priorities than a Republican administration, pressured by radical abolitionists. But McClellan, as usual, was dithering-when there was delivered to him the celebrated Lost Order (found, propitiously, in a meadow) spelling out current Rebel plans in detail and in toto. In September 1862-after a year and a half of war-Richmond was safe, Washington was threatened, Lee was advancing through Maryland. ![]()

In the woods tana french series6/24/2023 ![]() At times, the two cases seem utterly unconnected, save by coincidence at other times, there’s the suspicion that there may be a direct causal connection. The novel dips into both cases and they butt against each other. ![]() Only Ryan was recovered, with blood on his shoes and no memory of what had happened to him. There is a further complication: the site where Katy Devlin is discovered is the same place that, twenty years earlier, Ryan and his two best friends disappeared. ![]() The usual trickle of evidence (interviews, autopsy, forensics) leads to the perpetrator. Detective Rob Ryan and Cassie Maddox are dispatched to investigate. A twelve year old girl, Katy Devlin, is discovered dead on the altar stone at an archeological dig. ![]() This is my second Tana French novel, and it was her debut with the Dublin Murder Squad series. ![]()

The maltese falcon 19306/23/2023 ![]() ![]() Spade, a seemingly amoral private detective who nevertheless still abides by some kind of code, becomes even more of an enigma in Bogart’s performance. ![]() Humphrey Bogart stepped into the role of Sam Spade as though the character were a tailored suit. ![]() The film is a tightly constructed, perfect example of film noir, possibly the first film noir. Here’s what I don’t do: I don’t make them watch the brilliant 1941 film starring Humphrey Bogart and directed by John Huston. ![]() And finally I get to situate the formal analysis in a wider context–the novel appeared in 1930 shortly after the start of the Great Depression–which usually generates some befuddled conversation about why such a genre would be developed at that point in time and what that does for our understanding of the novel. The process of formal analysis also allows me to point out that the novel offers a striking example of a MacGuffin–a plot device that catches the reader’s and the characters’ attention but is unimportant in itself except as a means of driving the plot forward. It enables me to push the students on their formal analysis because I get to introduce a new genre: the hard-boiled detective novel. The novel allows me to make any number of observations that develop the larger themes of the course. One my favorite parts of the course is discussing Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon. Each year I teach an upper-level undergraduate course on U.S. ![]()

She has been homeschooled for several years, and her parents have forbidden her to date, but she won’t tell Logan why. As Logan learns more about Sage, he realizes that she needs a friend as much as he does, if not more. But things start to look up for Logan when a new student breezes through the halls of his small-town high school. Since then–much to his friends’ dismay–he has been despressed, pessimistic, and obessed with this ex, Brenda. ![]() The book synopsis piqued my interest and it quickly became one of the best books I read last year.ĭescription of Almost Perfect: Logan Whitherspoon recently discovered that his girlfriend of three years cheated on him.
